BioNext MedTech Innovation Challenge Series: How to Get Started

Date: Wednesday, November 6, 2024
Time: 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Location: Robarts Research Institute, 6th Floor

Workshop Overview:

Starting a medical technology company can be a complex process, as it involves not only the typical challenges of launching a business but also whether or not there is a market for your idea/product. We will hear from Colin Macaulay with a presentation about Product-Market-Fit and why we use it. We will also delve into market assessment tips with case studies provided by Ventripoint (Justin Leushner). This will be an exciting and worth while event for those who want to pursue commercializing an idea they already have or just want to learn more about entrepreneurship and what is involved in starting your journey in developing a medical technology.

Who Should Attend:

Students, trainees, and faculty eager to explore the MedTech innovation and entrepreneurship space. Whether you have an idea for a new product, want to address a major healthcare challenge, or are interested in turning ideas into impactful solutions, this event is for you!

About the Speakers:

Colin Macaulay is an innovation educator, life-science startup advisor, and former biotech executive, with more than 15 years in a venture-backed biotech company. As a business development manager at WORLDiscoveries, Colin helps the local research community with IP protection and commercialization, including due diligence, market analysis, and the marketing and licensing of technologies. As an educator and advisor to the local startup community and the BioNext medtech incubator, Colin guides new life-science entrepreneurs in the translation of their ideas into business models, coaching them through product-market fit, competitive analysis, technology transfer, and IP and business strategies.

Justin Leushner is the Manager of BioNext, a leading figure in MedTech innovation. With extensive experience in the biotech and medical technology sectors, Justin has successfully launched and led several initiatives aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and commercialization. His expertise in guiding early-stage companies through the innovation process and his passion for creating opportunities in the healthcare space make him a valuable resource for anyone looking to break into the MedTech industry.

What is the BioNext MedTech Innovation Challenge:

The BioNext Challenge is a series of four interactive sessions throughout the year, designed to equip you with the essential knowledge and skills to kickstart your MedTech journey. Each session is packed with invaluable insights, leading up to the final pitch competition where participants present their innovative ideas to a panel of judges, competing for cash prizes and recognition.

Purpose of the BioNext MedTech Innovation Challenge:

  • Engagement: Inspire students, trainees, and faculty to explore MedTech commercialization, demonstrating the feasibility and available resources.
  • Feeder Program: Act as an entry point for broader innovation and entrepreneurship programs such as the MSK competition, GSIS, MIF program, BioNext, Synapse, and more. Help innovators gain momentum to raise capital or partner with larger companies.
  • Light Touch: Designed to be manageable alongside other academic or professional commitments.
