About this Event
At this workshop, attendees will learn what biochar is, why biochar is helpful, and how to make it. We’ll cover some basic fundamental principles of pyrolysis, fire a small TLUD (Top-lit updraft gasifier) made of stacked cans, and make biochar from on-site forestry and crop residue in an earthen pit using the flame cap kiln method.
Attendees will be offered a 2 quart bag of ground raw biochar to take home for agricultural use only. Attendees should approach this workshop like a modified bonfire, wearing layers if needed and staying hydrated.
Biochars have made substantial breakthroughs in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and global warming, reducing soil nutrient leaching losses, sequester atmospheric carbon into the soil, increasing agricultural productivity, reducing bioavailability of environmental contaminants and subsequently, becoming a value-added product sustaining bioeconomy.
