Facilities
Hazel Hill Wood is a secluded 70-acre conservation woodland and retreat centre that offers basic indoor accommodation in off-grid eco-buildings with warm showers. You can also camp.
Most of the accommodation is twin rooms; please expect to share if you come alone. There are a few group/family rooms. Let us know if you're part of a wider group and we'll try and put you together.
The activities will be all outdoors, with bench seating available at the Campfire Circle and Roundhouse, plus plenty of space for picnic blankets and camping chairs. There are outdoor compost toilets. Drinking water will be available.
Free parking but limited spaces available - please arrive by bicycle, on foot, by taxi or car share if possible.
Joining instructions
We’re really looking forward to seeing you at Hazel Hill Wood for our annual BioBlitz! The below gives you further information about arrival and departure, food, what to bring/wear, and how to get here. Please make sure to share this with anyone else you have booked tickets for.
Arrival and departure
Please arrive at Hazel Hill Wood from 6pm. We will show you to your room so you can set up camp (or give guidance on where to pitch if you are actually camping). We plan to serve dinner around 7pm but will make sure to save some for you if you’re arriving later. Once everyone has arrived on Friday evening, we’ll go through the plan for the weekend.
The event closes at 3pm on Sunday.
How to get here
Hazel Hill Wood is located off Grimstead Road between Farley and East Grimstead. If using sat nav, use postcode SP5 1AU and you'll see our yellow and green "Hazel Hill Wood" sign on the road - we don't have a postcode but this is the farm opposite us.
Public transport - travel by coach or train to Salisbury. The easiest way from Salisbury to the wood (7 miles) is by taxi. Classic Cabs on 01722 710111 should charge a fixed rate of £20 (£25 on a Sunday). Others may charge more. It's advisable to book in advance.
Cycling or walking - Dean (Wilts) train station is 3 miles away - a nice walk or cycle if that's your thing. We may be able to help coordinate lift sharing - get in touch if this would be helpful (ideally with at least a week's notice).
Food
All food, including meals and snacks, will be provided and will be vegetarian (mostly vegan). We will all pitch in to create meals and will sort out teams for this on Friday evening. If you would like to bring any snacks to share, that will be very welcome. Please let us know.
-Drinks – we’ll provide hot drinks (tea, coffee, herbal) and water.
-Alcohol – we won't be providing any alcohol but if you would like to bring a bottle of wine or a couple of beers to enjoy in the evenings please do.
Evening campfires
A weekend at Hazel Hill Wood is not complete without an evening campfire in the Heartwood. Feel free to bring a favourite song, short story or poem to share, and if you’re a musician please bring your acoustic instruments too.
What to bring
This kit list is designed as a guide to help keep you warm, comfortable and safe. More information on the buildings can be found here on our website - you will be staying in either the Oak House or Hideaway.
What to bring and expect - for overnight stays
Clothing
-Slippers or warm socks for wearing in the buildings as we ask for all other footwear to be removed at the door
-Comfortable, warm clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty. Long trousers and long-sleeved tops are advisable. Due to brambles and other thorns, jeans/tough trousers are preferable to leggings/thin trousers.
-Spare dry clothes for indoors
-Waterproof coat (and trousers if you have them)
-Suitable footwear for outdoor walking: waterproof walking boots/work boots/wellies. We have some spare wellies at the wood.
Bedding
-A sheet for covering a mattress
-A sleeping bag or quilt/duvet – whatever you prefer given the season/temperature
-A pillow and pillow case
-If camping – please bring everything you’d normally need
Personal Items
-Toiletries – please note that our grey water goes through a reedbed system, so natural and biodegradable products are preferred
-A towel
-Insect repellent (suitable for ticks)
-A portable torch
-A water bottle
-Any wildlife survey kit you may have, e.g. bug pots, binoculars, hand lens, bat detector
-Wildlife identification books and mobile phone apps if you have them (though bear in mind there is very little internet at Hazel Hill Wood)
Ticks
Please read NHS tick and Lyme disease guidance.
Using mobile phones, and emergency contact
Please note that we’re off-grid, so there is no mains electricity at Hazel Hill Wood and you won’t be able to charge phones (or use other electrical appliances). Please therefore bring your own battery mobile chargers as necessary. There is patchy mobile phone reception at the wood, some providers get limited signal. We recommend you view this as an opportunity to immerse yourselves in nature and try a mobile-digital-detox! If you do need to be contacted, or to make an external call, we have an emergency mobile phone at the wood - 07487 326370.
Anything else?
If this email and the event website haven’t answered all your questions, please contact Charley on [email protected] or 07519 464023. Otherwise, we look forward to meeting/seeing you!
