A headstone dedication ceremony will be held at Spring Hill Cemetery Park on December 7 at 11 AM for Charleston musician Billy Cox, “The Dixie Songbird,” a popular and talented country musician in the 1930s. He broadcast over radio station WOBU from the Ruffner Hotel for many years, and he was the second-most recorded country musician in West Virginia prior to World War II. Cox died in 1968 and was buried in an unmarked grave. A new headstone will be dedicated with a brief overview of Cox’s life and recording career. Some of Cox’s songs will be played, weather permitting. The public is invited to attend. Participants will meet at the Spring Hill Cemetery Park office, 1555 Farnsworth Drive, at 11 AM and will proceed from there to the grave site.
