THE BOOK
Karl Baier has been enjoying his tour on the CIA's seventh floor as the Special Advisor for Strategic affairs, a reward of sorts for his successful mission in Turkey two years earlier. But with the intensifying and divisive debate in Washington about America's future engagement in Vietnam, the Director sends Baier on a special mission to Saigon to prepare a report on the Agency's assessment of the situation on the ground and the prospects for America's growing involvement. The assignment has a specific focus and a tight deadline. But it isn't long before Baier is drawn into a dangerous operation that has much deeper implications for the war itself and the broader global and strategic competition, of which Vietnam is only one part.
THE AUTHOR
Bill Rapp has spent the last 43 years as an analyst, diplomat, and senior executive at the Central Intelligence Agency, both as a staff employee for 35 years, and then another nine (and still counting) as a part-time consultant and trainer after his retirement in 2017. Bill is currently writing an espionage series that follows the adventures of fictional CIA officer Karl Baier as he confronts the challenges facing the United States and the CIA during the Cold War. Assignment in Saigon, which places Baier in Vietnam in 1964, is the sixth book in the series. Join us as we discuss how Bill tries to draw on his extensive background and experiences as an intelligence officer and his previous career as a historian of Modern Europe to craft authentic and historic thrillers that inform and entertain readers--while not giving too much away about the world he worked in for the last four decades.
