The Iconic American Classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, is celebrating its 125th year, but this American masterpiece has its roots here in Central New York. And, the seeds of what inspired this incredible work were sown in American tradition.
Author L. Frank Baum was a native of Chittenango, NY, situated within the Oneida (who were America’s first allies) homelands, which included the very portage that Fort Stanwix was built to protect, and thus was steeped and influenced by the history and culture of the area to create this American staple. Come for a 45 minute walk around the fort to learn how Dorothy was inspired by a woman he knew who had been adopted into the local Mohawk Nation, how the scarecrow protected men from being killed, how liquid libations cured both the cowardly lion and the men at the fort of their ills! Walk with us and celebrate the tradition that influenced this work and learn how this piece of Americana continues to influence American culture to this day!
