This class is to prepare kids for the school commute and is targeted specifically at middle schoolers and those rising 6th graders who are biking further and on more challenging routes than they've commuted on before. We will cover the basics of bike maintenance, how to fix a flat, tips to keep the bike secure on the bike rack, what the law requires, and navigating the urban environment (including route planning, on-road, and sidewalk riding).
We will meet at the Richland Public Library three consecutive days from 9am to noon. Kids need to bring their bikes and helmets. Bikes must pass a basic safety inspection and helmets must be worn at all times when riding. We can, on a very limited basis, supply bikes and helmets if we know far enough in advance.
Kids who attend all three days will receive a lock and a set of lights. We will have other "swag" such as water bottles, patch kits, and stickers. Attendance is limited to 8 kids (4:1 ratio of kids to instructors) and we will waitlist students. Priority registration will be given to kids who plan to attend all three days.
Parents are welcome to observe the class. Helmet rules apply equally to adults - no exceptions. A liability waiver is required for all participants as well. Registration will be via an external website -- we will share the link with interested participants in mid-July.
