A turn of the century chiller from versatile director Kiyoshi Kurosawa, this J-Horror hit favours a palpable, unsettling atmosphere over mic-drop set pieces and jump scares. Pulse tracks a group of young people in Tokyo who encounter a mysterious website which asks “Do you want to meet a ghost?”, and seems to cause a series of disappearances and suicides.
Investigations lead to horrifying truths, a viral computer programme and a “forbidden room.” Conceived before social media enveloped personal and public life, Kurosawa’s film terrifyingly anticipates some of the most fundamental dilemmas presented by our increasing connectivity.

Olivier Assayas’ globetrotting neo noir/cyber horror stars Chloë Sevigny, Connie Nielsen, and Gina Gershon as competing corporate players looking to advance their company’s interest in a Japanese enterprise developing three-dimensional pornogrpahy. From kidnap to burglary, seemingly nothing is off the table…but Demonlover’s rabbit holes prove deeper and darker than is first apparent.
Boasting an iconic Sonic Youth Score, this bruising, brutalising film plays with genre expectations as it flits between scenes of slick corporate espionage and devastating art horror that evoke the likes of David Cronenberg, David Lynch and Abel Ferrara. Conceived as the internet was beginning to gain a foothold in popular life, Assayas’ vision proves disturbingly prescient.
These screenings will be introduced by Tom Grieve and Jim Laycock, programmers at Bigger Than Life. Tickets are £7.50 per film, or £10 for the double bill. There will be an intermission.
