About this Event

Land Acknowledgement

The SFU Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue respectfully acknowledges that Burnaby is located on the ancestral and unceded homelands of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples. We are grateful for the opportunity to be on this territory.

The Burnaby Community Assembly is a group of 45 Burnaby residents, selected through a civic lottery to broadly mirror the demographic diversity of Burnaby, who are helping shape Burnaby’s Official Community Plan. Over the course of six months, the Burnaby Community Assembly will meet to learn, hear from experts and community voices, work through trade-offs and create recommendations for Burnaby’s new Official Community Plan. Over the first three Assembly meetings it has already begun to tackle issues such as livability, housing accessibility, climate resilience and transportation in the context of a growing city.

Have your say! The Big Ideas Workshop is an opportunity for the broader Burnaby community to hear from the Assembly and share your Big Ideas for actions Burnaby can take on growth, livability and housing. Your ideas will inform the Assembly's next phase of deliberation where it will weigh trade-offs and develop draft recommendations. The Assembly’s final recommendations will be shared publicly and the City has committed to receiving and responding to these recommendations, ensuring the process is transparent and accountable.

The event will include presentations about the Assembly and the Official Community Plan, as well as facilitated activities to gather your Big Ideas. Light refreshments and snacks will be provided.

The Burnaby Community Assembly is part of the three-year Urban Resilient Futures Initiative. The founding partners for Urban Resilient Futures are the City of Burnaby, Simon Fraser University’s Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue and Vancity, initiated by a generous contribution from an anonymous donor. This work is also being supported by the Civic Innovation Lab, and a contribution from the Renovate the Public Hearing Initiative. For this project, SFU’s Morris J Wosk Centre Centre for Dialogue has full editorial autonomy from its partners and funders in running the Burnaby Community Assembly.
