Blackout Theatre Company is proud to announce the unveiling of the “Wells Park Trolley Door,” the newest installment of Big Doors NM, an ongoing multimedia art project honoring Albuquerque’s historic neighborhoods. The ribbon cutting will take place on Sunday, October 6th at 5:00 p.m. at Tractor Brewing - Wells Park, and will include a listening party for the story and soundscape connected to the door. Big Doors NM is a theatrical public art installation featuring very small doors affixed to very local buildings. Each door interprets the history of its neighborhood through the visual design of the door itself and a short accompanying soundscape. Originally inspired by Karen Anderson Singer’s Tiny Doors project in Atlanta, project director Andee Schray envisioned Big Doors NM as a means of bringing Albuquerque’s history to life in a brand-new, accessible way. The first two doors were built remotely in the 2020-21 season as Blackout sought innovative ways to safely hire artists and share New Mexican stories in the height of pandemic shutdowns.
This year, Blackout Theatre is a proud recipient of the 2024 Visit Albuquerque Tourism Grant in support of Big Doors NM, and the Wells Park Trolley Door, designed and fabricated by local artist Jordyn Palma, will be the first of four new doors created this season under this new grant support. The Wells Park door reflects the history of the streetcar that brought sawmill workers to and from the Downtown district, as well as the history of the building itself, which was the former site of Pride Gym.
