Journey with us into the exciting world of bicycle repair and maintenance as we deep dive into a complete bicycle tune up.
About this Event

This three-part series on bicycle maintenance will provide a thorough breakdown and explanation of what a professional bike shop will expect to perform during a Full Tune Up, including cleaning.

This is a locals-only in-person course broken into three one-hour classes Thusday Evenings in January 2023

From tip to tail, we will clean and address each component of a bicycle, explaining its function with an eye for maintenance and functional longevity.

Perfect for those with an old bicycle that's been sitting in the garage for years gathering dust, or any individual looking to gain insight and skills to maintain their bicycle themselves.

PLEASE NOTE: It is impossible to cover every bicycle component type and standard that exists in 2022.

The specific constraints of this three-part class are determined by the bicycle we will be tuning and are:

-Caliper Rim Brakes

-Mechanical indexed or friction shifting(non-electric shifting).

-Multi-Speed Deraiuller-type drivetrains

-Wheels with Tubes.

-Threaded steerer tubes with quill type stems.

-Cup and cone style bearings in headset, hubs and bottom bracket.

Even if your own project bike doesn't fit within all of these constraints, these are all foundational bicycle mechanic skills that will benefit all!

The class is borken down into three one-hour classes:

1/12/23 Part one: Initial Intake, Inspection and Assessment. How much can we determine about the path ahead with a short expedited run-through of a bicycle. Set the stage for an efficient, effectual tune up.

1. With an initial Zoomed out view we ask: "What is the owner and maintenance history of this bicycle? What is the quality of the bicycle? What is the approximate age and is there any glaring visible wear?"

2. Zoomed in view... Bottom Bracket , hub and headset bearings, spoke tension/wheel true, cables housing, brakes, shifters, deraiullers. Test the systems in-stand and build a mental list of potential problems.

3. Making a repair checklist and gathering needed components.

1/19/23 Part two: Cleaning, Wheels, bearings, cables and drivetrain.

1. Initial cleaning

2. Wheel cleaning, true and hub bearing adjustment.

3. Headset and Bottom bracket bearing adjustment.

4. Cable and housing lubrication/replacement.

5. Drivetrain cleaning.

1/26/23 Part Three: Putting it all together! Adjusting Brakes, Tuning Shifting/Deraiullers, Adjusting cockpit, test ride.

1. Wheels on

2. Brake Adjustment

3. Derailler/Shifting Adjustment

4. Cockpit adjustment: Stem/Bars, grips, shifter and brake levers.

5. Test ride that thing!
