PRESS RELEASE “Beyond… / Au-delà…” takes place in Istanbul as one of the international satellite events held simultaneously with the 8th Biennial of Non-Objective Art (BIANO-8), based in France. Curated by Selin Yağmur Sönmez and Erdem Küçükköroğlu, the exhibition is presented to the audience at Ayn Earth Studio.
The Biennial seeks to establish a universal visual language through pure form, color, and material, bringing the contemporary forms of non-objective art into circulation across different geographies. The Istanbul edition brings together artists from around the world through an open call, expanding the Biennial’s intellectual scope.
More than 150 artists from France, Germany, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Japan, the United States, Australia, and many other countries have sent their non-objective works in postcard format to Istanbul. Envelopes, stamps, and notes sent from around the world accompany this process, making the postal exchange a key element in shaping the exhibition’s structure. This network of circulation established through mail creates a decentralized mode of artistic production.
Non-objective art, moves away from the effort to represent the outside world, constructs its meaning in relationships emerging from the inherent qualities of form, color, and material. As an autonomous form of visual thinking, this orientation focuses not on familiar imagery but on the internal order of formal elements, exploring the possibilities of meaning beyond representation. Thus, the work ceases to be the carrier of a narrative and becomes formal existence itself.
"Beyond..." rethinks non-objective art within conditions of contemporary production and circulation. The open call, as a method that democratizes production and participation, introduces new possibilities for artistic exchange. Meanwhile, the interaction enabled through postal correspondence renders the pure formal experience of non-objective art visible within a contemporary context.
