About this Event
We cordially invite you to join us at the gala celebration of Durga Pujo 2024 over the days of October 9th until October 13th.
The Background Story: Durga Puja is the celebration of the victory of good over evil. According to Hindu Mythology, once upon a time there was a Demon named Mahishasura who worshipped long and hard to the Gods to ask for a blessing. Pleased with the Demon's dedication, the Gods decided to bless Mahishasura. Mahishasura asked for a special blessing whereby no God, no man nor an animal could ever K*ll him. The Gods then granted him his wish. Basking in his new-found claim to fame, Mahishasura went on a rampage, loot and killing spree causing upheavel to humankind. Looking at the poor plight of human-beings, the Gods then came together to decide what can be done to remediate the situation. By the combined forces that resided in all the Gods, they created Goddess Durga, the feminine divinity or 'Shakti ' to destroy Mahishasura. Each and every God presented Mother Durga with a special weapon to adorn her ten hands and to help her defeat the Demon Mahishasura. The Gods offered a Lion as Ma Durga's Chariot Animal to ride on. Ma Durga then rode on her Lion to meet the Demon Mahishasura on the battlefield and emerged victorious relieving Mahishasura of all his sins. Durga Puja Festival in the state of Bengal and across India, celebrates this auspicious moment of the victory of Mother Durga over the Demon Mahishasura at the special moment of 'shandhikhan' (the hour of victory). According to common folk-lore in Bengal, it is also believed that Mother Durga (also wife of Lord Shiva) takes a break for five days from Shiva's household to comes to her Parental home on earth with her 2 sons and 2 daughters every autumn for holiday. Hence Durga Puja is also a celebration of her home-coming.
