Bhimbetka Cave paintings dating back to approximately 30,000 years. Rock shelters that were home to humans, millennia ago. And a rich flora and fauna surrounding these, indeed, make Bhimbetka a gift to us from our earliest ancestors. The Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka has the oldest-known rock art in India, as well as is one of the largest prehistoric complexes to be seen. About 47 min drive from Bhimbetka will also take us on a tour to Bhojpur Shiva Temple. It houses around 7.5 feet high shivlingam in its sanctum. It is believed that the construction of the temple was commenced during the reign of Paramara King Bhoja.
The probable reason for the establishment of Buddhist monuments at Sanchi is the city of Vidisha. The interest of the great Mauryan emperor Ashoka in Vidisha and around was because his wife Devi belonged to Vidisha. The main attraction of Sanchi is the Great Stupa, believed to be the first monument to be erected in Sanchi in the third century BC. It is also one of the oldest stone structures in India and is considered one of the finest examples of Buddhist architecture and art, built by the Mauryan emperor Ashoka. The stupa has a hemispherical dome that is surrounded by a railing and four gateways, each adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures depicting stories from the life of Buddha. The Stupa is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is a must-visit for anyone interested in history and architecture.
Udaigiri Caves are just 16 kilometres from Sanchi and offer another opportunity to see some beautiful rock carvings. There are 20 caves here – 18 Hindu and 2 Jain – that have religious iconography and stories sculpted from the rocks. They were made over a period of many generations between the 4th and 5th centuries AD.
