BGI Landscape Workshop: Selection, Management & Design, for Biodiversity

September 19, 11am-4:00pm @ the Naval Cemetery Landscape

Come see how a small native meadow managed with intention can have a big impact and learn how you might apply some of our techniques and knowledge in other landscapes and gardens. This day is designed as professional development and networking for public greenspace professionals in all fields, departments and levels, but if you're a steward of land or interested in attending you can also register.

(NCL) is unique as a cemetery and pollinator habitat, and also as a landscape built, maintained and operated solely by the non-profit Brooklyn Greenway Initiative. Donations support our work maintaining landscapes and advocating for the construction and maintenance of safe greenways. As a forerunner in urban meadow implementation, we have much to share on design, horticulture maintenance techniques, and programming and visitor engagement for a native urban meadow.

Join us on September 19 for presentations from our NCL advisory committee member Sarah Kornbluth and consultant Nic Comparato to hear about all aspects of landscape professional work (design, plant selection and plant care) for bee, bat and bird habitat. including:

  • Bat species and habitat considerations from bat expert Nic Comparato
  • Native bee species and habitat considerations from native bee expert Sarah Kornbluth of the American Museum of Natural History
  • Bird species and habitat considerations from local bird expert (TBA)
  • Gardener-led presentations on wildlife observed at the NCL (over 85 species of birds observed in one year)
  • Presentation from the Director of Horticulture and Greenway stewardship about programming design and implementation for gardens to foster wildlife and increase visitors’ appreciation for biodiversity

Two sessions at this event are approved by LA CES for 2.5 professional development hours. Full schedule will be posted here and emailed to registrants in August.

There will be an optional social mixer on site at the NCL after the day’s programming for attendees to network and speak to colleagues in the field. Please note some presentations will be held at another location in the Navy Yard (a 15 minute walk from the Naval Cemetery Landscape) for necessary a/v hook ups and there will be an alternate presentation space available for the day in the Navy Yard in the event of rain.

The workshop will also share details about emerging regional points of interest and the best way to report your wildlife observations. Attendees will walk through the NCL and see examples of the principles and techniques presented in practice.

If you’re looking to broaden your horticultural training and help protect plants around you as a functional resource for other speceis as well as humans, and engage visitors and volunteers to your managed space around this ecological functionality, then this workshop is for you! There is a small fee for this workshop and registration is required so register here to reserve your spot!

Registered participants will receive a pass for access to NewLab, the location for the presentations prior to the NCL walk.
