About this Event

Keeping the Greenway clean and green isn't easy, but with your help, together we can keep the Greenway litter-free and enjoyable for all! We're excited to welcome the public to join BGI staff and gardeners to steward the Naval Cemetery Landscape and adjacent Greenway for a special fall festival event volunteer opportunity.

This event will be Saturday, October 25th, with three shifts available to sign up for (choose when registering, or sign up for all three ):

9:00am -11:00am. Help us set up for our fall festival! Light raking and sweeping, table and tent and materials set up. Directing vendors and program leaders to stations.

11:00-3:00 pedestrian and bike directional and slow zone area attendees, bike parking station attendees, wayfinding and program station support

3:00-5:00 Help us clean up and breakdown after the event. Trash removal, activity station breakdown, materials and supplies packing, sign removal, sweeping

Registration is required.

Learn about the Naval Cemetery Landscape (NCL), greenways in Brooklyn, and how community groups and members can support their beauty and accessibility for everyone!

Participants will meet the Director of Horticulture and Greenway Stewardship, hear more about our stewardship work, and get a chance to ask questions before helping us at this event!

Volunteer Requirements:

  • We are looking for those who can work outside in various weather conditions.
  • Age 18+

BGI will provide necessary tools. We encourage participants to bring their own gloves, but gloves will also be available on site. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and sign a participant waiver. We recommend wearing sunscreen, a sun hat, and comfortable clothing in layers. While weather can be unpredictable in fall and winter, we will work in light rain and only cancel if heavy rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast. We also recommend bringing a full water bottle.

Located on the eastern edge of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and accessed from the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway at 63 Williamsburg Street West between Kent and Flushing Avenues. We highly recommend taking public transportation, biking or walking to NCL.

The Naval Cemetery Landscape is fully operated and open-to-the-public by Brooklyn Greenway Initiative through the generosity of our supporters, The Leon Levy Foundation, Con Edison, and Nature Sacred and many Greenway users across Brooklyn.
