Belfast Film Festival is delighted to present this much-anticipated film from Belfast directorial duo, Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa. After the success of their previous films Good Vibrations (2012) and Ordinary Love (2019), Leyburn and d’Sa have returned with a comedy- drama about the fall-out between Mick McCarthy and Roy Keane during the lead-up to the 2002 Japan World Cup.Steve Coogan and Éanna Hardwicke give larger- than-life performances as the two famous and almost diametrically opposed personalities of Irish football. When the team arrives for pre tournament training in Saipan, a small island in the western Pacific ocean, they find themselves without basic amenities like a football pitch and, well, footballs.
As tensions mount between manager and team captain, the already fragile relationship descends into surreal chaos. Leyburn and Barros D’Sa use their signature lo-fi style to capture the spirit of the age, and add much to the mythology of one of the most intriguing periods of football and sports media history.
