Join us for the launch of a stunning exhibition by Fallen Angels Dance Theatre, celebrating 10 years work in Wigan Borough. ‘Beyond the Surface’ showcases film, video and digital art, including a beautiful new commission ‘Samadhi’. It is a Recoverist Month event that, through the arts, changes the conversation on substance use and recovery.
Beyond the Surface profiles 10 years of Fallen Angels working in the borough of Wigan.
Beyond the Surface is an exhibition at the Turnpike Galley, Leigh of artworks, photography and films from Fallen Angels Dance Theatre. An exhibition focal point features the newly commissioned work Samadhi, an immersive digital dance, light and sound installation.
The word “samadhi” is derived from the Sanskrit roots “sam” (together or integrated) and “dhi” (to hold or place). It signifies a state of complete concentration, stillness, and union with the object of meditation.
This unique, digital dance experience has been inspired by the real-life experiences of the Fallen Angels recovery community. Members engage in daily practices such as grounding and meditation to establish a deeper connection. These practices serve as inspiration for the creation of digital dance, incorporating the movements and motions of bodies in recovery from substance use and those living with mental health conditions.
Through digital technology and collaboration, the work is accompanied by an immersive light and soundscape. The combination of visuals and audio aims to convey journeys of healing experienced by people in recovery. The hope is that audiences gain a meditative feeling through this experience.
