In this 90 minute workshop led by Leo Sussman, teens will broaden their musical imagination by exploring new and unconventional ways of performing, interpreting, and improvising music. In this workshop, we’ll experiment with creative forms of musical notation – like graphic scores based on symbols and images as well as text pieces consisting of verbal instructions – all of which encourage you to think outside the box and express your own musical ideas in fresh, personal ways. For intermediate to advanced middle & high school instrumentalists (should be comfortable with at least a half dozen two-octave major scales by memory and proficient in reading traditional staff notation). No prior improvisation experience required, just an open mind and eagerness to experiment! NYSSMA level 4+, age 12+
