About this Event
A guided wine tasting focused on sweetness, balance, and structure — exploring how and why sweetness appears in wine, and what it tells us about place and process.
In this session, we’ll take a closer look at sweetness in wine beyond common assumptions. We’ll explore how sweetness is created (or preserved), how it interacts with acidity, tannin, and alcohol, and why sweet wines can be some of the most precise and age-worthy expressions of terroir.
Guided by my personal time with winemakers in Portugal and the UK, alongside my WSET Level 3 certification from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, we’ll cover topics such as:
- Natural grape sugars and fermentation
- Residual sugar vs perceived sweetness
- The role of acidity and balance
- Climate, harvest timing, and winemaking choices
The tasting will move progressively through both dry and off-dry wines, building context before finishing with a biodynamic red dessert wine from the UK. This final wine offers a clear example of how sweetness can exist in harmony with structure and freshness, shaped by thoughtful farming and patient winemaking rather than manipulation.
As with all Beyond Prestige sessions, we’ll taste slowly, discuss openly, and connect each wine back to its land and method of production. Light complementary snacks will be provided to support the tasting.
This session is ideal for those who want a deeper understanding of sweetness in wines — whether you’ve been curious, cautious, or intrigued.
