You know, after two decades of diving deep into the legal trenches, defending companies from those pesky employee claims, you'd think I'd be lounging on a beach somewhere, enjoying the sweet lull of retirement. But, guess what? I did pivot, just not in the way you might think.
You see, over those years, I uncovered this undeniable pattern: a large chunk of employee claims stem from, well, messy relationships with their leaders. And, oh boy, did I get a taste of that myself! When I took the mantle to lead a brigade of 105 souls, it hit me like a ton of bricks. For all the legal jargon and statutes I knew inside out, there was this vast chasm in my toolkit. Beyond basic civility, I was like a deer in headlights, clueless about building genuine connections with my team, motivating them, or rallying them under a shared vision.
But, as with all great challenges, it sparked inspiration. I dived headfirst into the art of leadership, experimenting, refining, and then passing on my newfound insights to my direct reports. And, lo and behold, we saw it! Engagement went up, turnover dipped down, and the team's spirit flourished.
