About this Event
On Friday 10 June, the Beyond Babel Film Festival will screen Vivir es fácil con los ojos cerrados / Living is Easy with Eyes Closed, directed by David Trueba in 2013. Set in Spain in 1996, this road movie follows a teacher (Javier Cámara) who uses the Beatles songs to teach English. Hearing that John Lennon is in Almería shooting Richard Lester’s How I Won the War, he decides to meet him. During this trip, he meets a 16-year-old boy (Francesc Colomer) and a young 20-year old young woman (Natalia Molina) who are both escaping from different problems. This journey will bring them together and change them.

Welcome to the Beyond Babel Multilingual Film Festival 2022! Now in its 6th year, Beyond Babel returns for our annual celebration of multilingual cultures and film. Beyond Babel is a film festival that aims to celebrate multilingual life showcasing a wide range of films that can open discussions on multilingual life and communities and how they are represented on screen. This edition of Beyond Babel remains true to its core values: embrace the beauty and complexity of multilingualism; showcase transnational film productions from different regions of the world; screen multilingual films which connect us with different cultures.
This year’s programme will bring together four days of screenings, with film introductions and Q&A sessions. The 6th edition focuses on two topics: the experiences of refugees and language learning, one of the core themes of this festival. The festival aims to engage, inspire, connect, and celebrate the culturally diverse communities of Manchester and beyond.
