Beads have always been more than decoration. Around the world, they’ve been used to tell stories, represent beauty, express identity, and even serve spiritual or social purposes. From royal garments in West Africa to offerings in temples in Asia, beads have carried meaning far beyond what we wear on our bodies. In Beyond Adornment, artist Valerie Wiebe and designer Onyx by Valentina explore this deeper history through art and fashion. Valerie’s new series of paintings incorporates beadwork directly onto the canvas, blurring the lines between fine art and craft. Each painting is paired with a handcrafted beadwork dress by Valentina, creating a shared visual story about how adornment connects us across cultures and generations.
The pieces draw inspiration from Valerie’s travels in places like Uganda, Morocco, Portugal, and her home in Saskatchewan, where she reflects on light, landscape, and human connection.
Hosted at The Saskatoon Club, the evening includes a fashion show where each painting and dress pairing will be presented side by side. Guests will also enjoy appetizer pairings created by Chef John Costanzi, inspired by the global influences behind the artwork and designs.
This event offers an inspiring look at how creativity can connect people, cultures, and ideas through shared expression.
