About this Event
Overview
More and more roleplaying games are offering open gaming licenses that allow individual designers to create content for their system. While this opportunity is wonderful, navigating the terminology and understanding what is and isn’t allowed can be a minefield. In this session, Boyd Stephenson, licensed attorney and the drivethrurpg.com bestselling author Intellectual Property in RPGs, will guide you through the legal underpinnings of copyright law, trademark law, and patent law and how they apply when publishing RPG content. At the end of the session, you will have a working layperson’s understanding of the legal concepts that underpin open gaming licenses, what content is and isn’t allowed, and when it’s time to call in an expert.
Boyd Stephenson is an attorney with experience in intellectual property matters. While he will be explaining general contours of intellectual property law in this session, Boyd Stephenson is not your attorney. Ethics guidelines from various state bar associations allow attorneys to provide general legal education to non-attorneys without forming an attorney-client relationship. As no attorney-client relationship forms from such educational offerings, participants should not expect client confidentiality or any other characteristic of the attorney-client relationship to form merely be attending the seminar.
