Beth Orton is best known for pioneering the "folktronica" sound, which blends acoustic folk elements with electronic beats and textures.
Orton's music career began in the underground London scene in the mid-1990s through a series of notable collaborations. She first came to prominence for her work with electronic producers, providing vocals for artists like William Orbit and The Chemical Brothers on tracks such as "Alive Alone" (1995) and later "Where Do I Begin" (1997). Her debut solo album, Superpinkymandy (1993), was a limited release in Japan, but her second album, Trailer Park (1996), earned critical acclaim internationally and helped establish her unique style.
Orton cemented her solo success with the release of Central Reservation in 1999, which won her the BRIT Award for Best British Female Solo Artist. This was followed by the UK top 10 album, Daybreaker, in 2002. Later in her career, her music sometimes moved toward a more traditional alt-folk sound, notably on Comfort of Strangers (2006). In 2022, she released the highly-praised, self-produced album, Weather Alive.
Sam Amidon is a singer and multi-instrumentalist (banjo, guitar, fiddle) from Vermont, now based in London, England. He has released seven acclaimed solo albums of songs on Bedroom Community and Nonesuch Records, the most recent of which is 2020’s “Sam Amidon.” He will be releasing his new record Salt River in late January.
Amidon’s material for these albums often consists of adventurous reworkings of traditional American ballads, hymns and work songs, with the New York Times writing that Amidon “transforms all of the songs, changing their colors and loading them with trapdoors.” The albums have been deeply collaborative in nature, inviting contributions from musicians such as composer Nico Muhly, guitarist Bill Frisell, and legendary percussionist Milford Graves.
