๐ฃ๏ธGuest speaker: Dan Clearwater
We are excited to have Dan Clearwater come and speak this month about his epic adventure on The Franklin River in Tasmania.
The Franklin River is the last wild river in Tasmania, flowing for 125km through the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
Most UNESCO World Heritage sites only meet one or two of the ten criteria for that status, but the Tasmanian site meets seven. Only one other site in the world (China's Mount Taishan) meets that many criteria.
First explored by wooden kayak in the 50's, it was only after several aborted week-long attempts that it was finally descended. More than 100km of whitewater, at every grade from 1 to 6, lies between the headwaters and the confluence with the Gordon River.
With frequent heavy rainfalls in the area, in the late 70's the Tasmanian Hydro Electric commission eyed up a Dam on the Franklin, sparking the biggest environmental protests to date in Australian history. Thousands were arrested in a direct blockade at the dam site, and it became the main issue in State and Fedaral elections. After 5 years of protest, the high court finally decreed "there will be no dams on the Franklin."
It's renowned as one of the top multi-day river trips in the Southern Hemisphere, but the Franklin deserves respect: severe floods ravage the area, trips get delayed and several fatalities have occurred.
The combination of natural and 1st nations history, alongside the recent history of public fights to protect this place make the journey down the Franklin fairly unique in the world.
Join Dan as he gives us a low-down on the river, the history, and his experience of rapids, floods, sieves and adventure as he and his mates embarked on a trip that was probably beyond their ability to successfully complete...
We will also be handing out free OFF-PISTE PROVISIONS, so get ready to sink your teeth into mouth watering vegan jerky!
This event is run through the New Zealand Alpine Club but members and non members are welcome. The more the merrier, so spread the word.
SEE YOU THERE!
