Author John Daniels will be telling us more about his new historic novel and what motivated him to share Isolde's story.
Isolde, Daughter of the Priest is set in the 14th Century in the dramatic landscape of Holy Island and North Northumberland and is based on a real historic figure. Isolde is excommunicated from the church with other members of her community of Lowick for not paying the corn tithes to the monastery on Holy Island in 1353.
The novel brings to life a girl who stands out from this distant time and deserves to be remembered.
The sequel Isolde, the Pilgrimage of Penitence to Rome is currently being written and follows her journey to Rome to seek pardon.
About John Daniels
John is a former language teacher and head teacher at a middle school in Ponteland who has lived in Lowick for many years. Research into the medieval history of the village and its link as one of four chapels to the monastery on Holy Island led to the discovery of the excommunication in 1353 of 20 members of the local community for not paying the corn tithes to the monastery. Isolde was one of those punished.
John has also recently published a book on the butterflies of Lowick, Colours of Summer a 50 year record of observing and recording local butterflies from 1971-2023 following a grant from the Barmoor Wind Farm, Community Foundation and published by Lowick Heritage Forum.
