BERNARD GILPIN PHOTO EXHIBITION
In spring 2017, Houghton-le-Spring celebrated the 500th anniversary of Bernard Gilpin's birth, the town's 16th century Rector who is famous for his charitable acts and the founding of the Houghton Feast ox roasting. This is your chance to once again see the special photograph exhibition that was put together to commemorate the quincentenary. The images will be hung on the railings of The Old Rectory alongside the newly unveiled blue plaque in The Broadway. Find out more about this great man at: www.bernardgilpin.co.uk
BERNARD GILPIN (1517 – 1583)
Rector of Houghton-le-Spring 1558 – 1583, co-founder of the Royal Kepier Grammar School and known as the ‘Apostle of the North’ and ‘Father of the Poor’ for his charitable acts and preaching around the North of England.
Gilpin's annual tradition of feeding the parish’s poor with a roasted ox every weekend between Michaelmas and Easter is still re-enacted each year at the annual festival of Houghton Feast.
