"Berlin 2579”
Photography exhibition, Kaloyan Todorov
In 1979, when the International Congress Center in Berlin (ICC Berlin) opened its doors, a grey concrete wall still divided not only the city but the entire world into the two camps of the Cold War. The building’s architecture was a promise of a different future—one in which technology would let us realise our full potential and serve the ultimate goal: the elevation of the human spirit. The International Congress Center is a gigantic machine, organised like a living organism with its own systems for air circulation, lighting and a spherical core. People call that sphere “the brain”—a perfect form capable of infusing vitality into the whole.
“Berlin 2579” is a dialogue between the technological optimism of the International Congress Center and today’s Berlin, where freedom of spirit is a way of life. Today the building has become a monument to a bygone vision of a future that never came to pass.
In the years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the city became a symbol of tolerance, freedom and a place for artistic expression. Buildings and monuments no longer define the city’s spirit; communities and people do. Its present and future are fluid and are not ruled by an all-powerful core.
The images from the streets in “Berlin 2579”—people caught mid-stride with their guard down—are not merely documentary shots. They are fragments of the complex mosaic of a society that contains both noise and pauses, the steady rhythm of footsteps and unforced laughter, music and absolute silence. When the street is a stage and the protagonists are nameless, what we seek are the invisible links in the greater social network. Thus, the grand promises of concrete, iron and glass have fulfilled their purpose of uniting people around a single vision, and today they are simply a backdrop absorbed into the city’s ever-changing experience.
Designing the future is not only a grand vision; it is also a continual rehearsal in the present that gives us the chance to glimpse what lies ahead.
Charitable Cause
All funds collected during the exhibition will be donated toward life-saving medical treatment.
