Join historian Dave Smoot for our thrilling October Second Saturday as he takes the audience on an adventurous journey back to 1861. Picture this: two PA regiments, the 50th and 55th, packed with Berks County warriors, setting sail for a daring mission at Port Royal in Beaufort County, SC. What were they after? Well, constructing a base to catch sneaky blockade runners was one goal. Using it as a launchpad to reclaim Charleston, Fort Sumter, Savannah, and Fort Pulaski was another. And let's not forget about sneaking into the heart of Confederate territory! But wait, there's a twist - the Union crew found themselves in a real pickle, surrounded by Confederate foes with no backup in sight. Will they conquer or be conquered? Tune in to find out!This program will be held in person, inside the BHC Museum Auditorium. The cost of this program is $5 for BHC members and $8 for non-members. The program fee includes admission to the BHC Museum. Coffee, hot tea, juice, and light refreshments will be made available for participants at 9:30 AM.
