Larry Freeland and Nick Sparchane will lead the next installment in our Neighborhood Nostalgia Series, as we share our memories of Wheeling’s next door neighbor to the south, Benwood, “Where Everybody is Somebody.” Named for Benjamin McMechen, the town’s Wheeling Steel plant and coal mine as well as other businesses, employed hundreds of workers from Wheeling throughout the years. Benwood was also the point at which the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad bridged the Ohio River to Bellaire.
