About this Event
"Bending the Arc: The Vote" chronicles the arduous struggle to secure voting rights for all people in Alabama during the 1960s, highlighting the sacrifices made and lives lost in this critical fight. As part of the Bending the Arc Project, the film examines the historical context of voter suppression, focusing on the impact of Jim Crow laws and the violent resistance faced by activists. Featuring powerful interviews and never-before-seen archival footage, the documentary captures pivotal moments such as Bloody Sunday and the successful Selma to Montgomery march, ultimately underscoring the enduring importance of voting and civic engagement in the ongoing battle for equality.
Following the screening, please join us for a panel discussion and Q&A featuring people in the film, including Lynda Lowery and Joanne Bland, who marched and were attacked during the Selma voting rights marches in 1965. A performance of "Amen" and other songs by The Carlton Reese Memorial Unity Choir will highlight our evening.
