Correct bend is essential for maintaining balance, suppleness, and smooth movement. A concept often misunderstood by both riders and trainers is that the horse should bend uniformly from nose to tail but because of the rigidity of the spine this isn’t possible.
In this webinar we take an in-depth look at the biomechanics of exactly how the horse creates lateral flexion.
We will study the anatomical range of lateral flexion movement available in each joint through the spine and within each part of his body.
Only once we understand what the anatomical normal is it possible to assess where limitations in bend are coming from.
We will also look at what causes a horse to struggle with lateral flexion and bend, and how a poor ability to bend can affect posture, symmetry, balance, and correct way of going. Plus, we’ll consider lateral weaknesses and hypermobility as well as stiffness and how this affects straightness.
Ridden and in-hand exercises will be demonstrated as well as massage and mobilisation techniques that you can do with your horse to improve and maintain lateral flexion and suppleness within the neck, back, ribcage and tail as well as whole body and lateral stability exercises too.
