We’re really excited to welcome to The Lescar a piano trio featuring three wonderful award winning musicians, led by the winner of BBC Radio Scotland Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2023, Ben Shankland. With a clear reverence for the jazz tradition and lineage, marked by an unmistakable personality in every phrase, this trio’s music is driven by melody and lyricism, with a nuanced take on rhythm and texture, and a playfulness that’s always present.
Joining Ben are Ewan Hastie (bass), winner of BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2022, and Jonathan Silk (drums), a really great drummer based in Birmingham who you may well have seen at The Lescar previously with the bands FORJ, Young Pilgrims and Home/Lands.
A musician making waves on the UK jazz scene, and currently based in Berlin, Ben’s playing is both lyrical and purposeful, balanced and thoughtful, and he has featured at jazz festivals including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle and Birmingham, as well as collaborating with Harben Kay and Lucy-Anne Daniels, and opening for international renowned artists Pablo Held and Jason Rebello.
‘Shankland’s playing combines lyricism with drive and precision, as well as a penchant for melody’ - The Scotsman
