Artist Cal Mac explores themes of belonging, addiction and dependency through sociological, scientific and visual dialogues.
About this Event

This lecture will focus on Mac’s sculptural works and their relationship to his multidisciplinary practice. Initially encountered as something alien, demonic or animal, his sculptures translate mental into physical, in which memories and subconscious notions of love, burden and dependency are envisioned as physical bodies. The sculptures reject specificity, and as a result exist in a separate world of subliminal and abstracted feeling. As with his most recent works, emotional accuracy is prioritised, neglecting the rules of anatomy. Mac will narrate the roots and evolution of this sculptural language, describing the material production, artist influences and lived experiences that bring them to life.

Cal Mac is a visual artist working and living in Glasgow. Working between sculpture, sound, print and video, he explores themes of belonging, addiction and dependency through sociological, scientific and visual dialogues. His work often looks at clubbing, intimacy and natural environments, enquiring into our current need for connection and escape. His work has been screened at Recontres Internationales (Paris, Berlin) Atlas Arts (Skye), The Royal Scottish Academy (Edinburgh), Limerick Institute of Technology, and online for Lift off Festival, and Film and Video Umbrella. Following his first commission from Film and Video Umbrella in 2020, Mac has done residencies at Cove Park and Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and opened the Aye Festival with his first large scale solo exhibition in June this year. In 2021 Mac was shortlisted for the Royal Scottish Academy Morton Award.
