Revolutionary War Medicine: With the outbreak of hostilities between the Crown and the rebelling colonies of North America, General George Washington petitioned the Continental Congress in June 1776 to create a medical department to care for the men he was about to lead into battle. The number of trained physicians in the colonies at the of the Revolutionary War was very small but the Continental Army Medical Corps was established by Congress in July of that same year. This lecture will provide the background of the development of medical care in colonial times, to the establishment of medical schools, and medical remedies and surgical treatments offered to our fledgling Continental Army, Navy and Marines. Dr. Murray Norcross, MD, MPH is a 30 year career Navy Medical Corps officer who served as an Internal Medicine / Primary Care physician with additional qualifications as a Diving Medical and Aeromedical Officer. He is a native of Adams, Mass in the Berkshires. He attended St Anselm College Class of 1983 and graduated from U Mass Medical School in Worcester, Mass in 1987. Trained at Naval Hospital San Diego and Naval Hospital Charleston, South Carolina, CAPT Norcross is a veteran of the Cold War, Desert Storm / Southern Watch, Operations Enduring Freedom, Joint Task Force FULL ACCOUNTING (POW / MIA recovery operations and JTF GTMO.Served as Medical Director for Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Japan and Naval Health Clinics New England along with several deployments and tours at the Pentagon.He is married to Ann Dallaire Norcross of Lee, Mass. He has two adult children, Monika Cerminara of Delaware and Nathaniel Thomas Norcross who is a member of the SAR Boston Chapter and MASSAR.
