About this Event
St. Louis Black Authors of Children’s Literature is partnering with Saint Louis Public Schools to Celebrate the Opening of their Eighth “Believe Project” Literacy Lab at Froebel Literacy Academy, December 6, 2022
SAINT LOUIS, MO -- The Froebel Literacy Academy, a Saint Louis Public School (SLPS), will soon become the newest home to a “Believe Project” literacy lab. The lab, an initiative of the St. Louis Black Authors of Children’s Literature (STLBACL) organization, is designed to improve reading proficiency in elementary students, K – third grade, by providing access to 1000 books reflecting the images and experiences of the young readers. A ribbon cutting will take place Tuesday, December 6, 2022, at Froebel Literacy Academy, 3709 Nebraska, 63118.
According to the US department of Education, students who are not strong readers in third grade are four times more likely to drop out of school. The Believe Project lab keeps students engaged and connected to the worlds they read about. We are particularly excited to see their reaction to the beautiful wall mural produced by local artists, books by local authors, and exposure to live theater all located in a colorful, culturally responsive homestyle setting.
Jim Triplett, principal of Froebel Literacy Academy, says, “It is important for Froebel students to have access to culturally relevant text to help increase reading proficiency and a love for reading! We are excited about bringing The Believe Projects’ literacy lab to Froebel because, simply put, our students need it and deserve it!”
“Our goal is simple,” says Julius B. Anthony, president, St. Louis Black Authors of Children’s Literature and The Believe Projects, “We want to encourage children to fall in love with literacy through experiences they feel a connection with, that builds confidence, and gives them joy! It is to ensure all children become successful readers by the end of third grade.”
Funding from YouthBridge Community Foundation of Greater St. Louis helped to make the project possible. STLBACL was selected for start-up grantee funding to ensure its eighth Believe literacy lab became a reality. YouthBridge has an ongoing commitment to youth literacy and its role in developing strong citizens and communities. The funds provided will support literacy-based technology and teacher training.
The Believe 8 literacy lab is also supported by community partners Nine PBS, The Noble Neighbor, and Ready Readers.
