Neurodivergent people have long been on the periphery of research that directly relates to neurodivergent people and communities. This public event invites audiences to recentre neurodivergent people in their understanding of neurodivergence, drawing on art, storytelling and sensory exploration.

Fabrica’s November Making Space has been awarded to Beth Sutton (she/they), who will be developing their current project ‘Being-neurodivergent-in-the-world. Treading new and exciting ground where anthropology meets the arts, the event explores what being neurodivergent means to newly diagnosed adults in the UK.

The event is led by Beth Sutton: a neurodivergent artist and anthropologist based at the University of Sussex, working in Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Artwork produced during Beth’s Making Space residency will be on display, speaking to complex, embodied and intersectional experiences. It will include an interactive installation that explores neurodivergence through the poetics of nature, a form of socially engaged art.

The majority of work on display has been developed collaboratively during the lifecycle of Beth’s current research project, involving a core group of NHS service users. This event presents an opportunity for artists, anthropologists, NHS colleagues, researchers, creative practitioners, or anyone curious about neurodivergence to learn more about how it is experienced from a lived, neurominority perspective.

Attendees will be invited to give feedback, which will be taken into consideration in the write-up about the artist residency within the context of a PhD. You’ll be encouraged to think differently about neurodivergence and how it can be expressed.
