About this Event
Event Photos

Exclusively arranged for the Forward Institute community, this special event offers an opportunity to get physically inside an orchestra, explore leadership in a musical context, and network with other fellows.

Aurora Orchestra is one of the most creative forces in classical music, with a reputation for electrifying music-making and innovative presentation that makes orchestral music relevant and accessible to a wider audience. It’s perhaps best known for its performances of whole symphonies entirely from memory, without sheet music or stands – the first orchestra in history to perform this way.

Aurora Fellows John Harte and Alistair Lomax (2020 fellowship) are extending a special invitation to Forward Institute Fellows to join the orchestra behind the scenes as it prepares for its latest ‘by heart’ project. On 15 September, FI fellows and their guests will be given special access to one of Aurora’s rehearsals, including an opportunity to get physically inside the orchestra, and to experience a complete performance of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique as the players perform the whole work from memory. You’ll hear from Principal Conductor Nicholas Collon about leadership in an orchestral context, get up close to musicians in a way that would be impossible in the concert hall, and even have a chance to get involved in the music-making yourselves.

Event details:

6pm–6.30pm: Welcome from Aurora Prinicpal Conductor Nicholas Collon and interactive session with orchestra

6.30–7.20pm: Complete performance of Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique (by heart)

7.20–8.30pm – drinks with other fellows and musicians
