About this Event

If you’ve ever been curious about birds and birding, here’s your chance to catch the bug! We will have binoculars to lend—why not make it a family outing?

After a quick lesson on binocular skills, we’ll explore the park—from tree canopy to river bank to wetland—and learn a little about how birds adapt to urban settings. Bird populations are in rapid decline, and urban green spaces play a critical role in protecting birds.

We’ll look for migrating birds passing through on their way north as well as the year round resident birds of the Park. And we’ll keep our eyes out for some of the birds of prey that use this park, the river basin, and the parking lot across the street as their hunting grounds.

This special park is just as important for people as it is for birds! It provides cooling shade and recreation for thousands of Cambridge residents that live along the edges the city’s most intense heat islands, and it helps protect the river from runoff.

Magazine Beach, Cambridge’s second-largest park, is located along the Charles River, between the B.U. Bridge and Pleasant Street. The 1818 Powder Magazine, the oldest building on the Charles River Basin, is now home to a Mass Audubon’s community nature program.

Limited to 24. Carpooling, public transportation and bikes are encouraged.

Time: Saturday, April 22. 8:00 – 9:30 am. A hard rain will cancel this trip.

Location: Meet at the stone Powder Magazine building which is located across from Microcenter at 730 Mass Ave., a 15 minute walk from Central Sq. Some free parking is available in the parking crescent across from Magazine Beach Shell, next to the BU Bridge and at the Riverside Boathouse.

Accessibility: Restrooms may be available at a coffee shop across the street.

WE HAVE BINOCULARS THAT YOU CAN BORROW FOR THIS EVENT. PLEASE ASK!
