WORKSHOP TWO - DECEMBER 14, 2024
• 2A – The Movement of Chant (1-2pm) o We will examine collections of neumes, the phrases and sounds of the different modes, and the ways that certain note groups and markings are sung.
o GOAL: To give the learner a basic understanding of how not only the notes but even the dynamics of how to sing them are preserved in the chant notation.
• 2B – The Seasons of Chant (2:30-3:30pm) o We will explore the movements of chant melodies from mode to mode, and the way these different melodies move through the liturgical year so as to give each season its own distinct “sound.”
o GOAL: To introduce the learner to the world of the schola, and the richness of the ancient liturgical music which was carefully collected and preserved in the early
20th century.
