About this Event
Come along to the Beecroft Art Gallery to explore and enjoy the works of Alan Sorrell, who in 1962 was commissioned by the Illustrated London News to document the archaeological sites of Nubia prior to the building of the Aswan High Dam.
An artist local to Southend, Alan Sorrell gained international recognition in the mid 20th century for his work documenting, reconstructing and reimagining historic sites. With a keen personal as well as artistic connection to archaegology, the national, post-war surge of interest in the preservation of heritgae saw Sorrell's career take off. From our own collectoins, Southend Museums is pleased to present 'Nubia', an exhibition showcasing the pieces Sorrell created to document the areas flooded for the creation of the Aswan High Dam, immortalising the region's lost landscape in his artwork.
This tour is free to attend, but donations are encouraged. Tickets should be booked for each person attending the tour. These tours are led by our Visitor Engagement Team.
