Becoming Weatherwise: A History of Climate Science in America opened at the American Philosophical Society Library & Museum on April 8, 2022. It explores the questions and methods that have driven the study of weather and climate in the Western world from the mid-eighteenth century through today. The exhibition highlights the importance of work by amateurs and professionals who have worked collaboratively to study weather and climate in the interest of agriculture, human health and comfort, military dominance, and simple curiosity. In addition, the exhibition considers how ideas about climate and weather have changed over time. Visitors will be exposed to the rich history of climate study, the rigor of current science, and the many possibilities for non-scientists to contribute to a more sustainable global climate – and the surprising and often-overlooked role the APS and its Members have played in these stories.
