You are invited to come and make Beautiful Garbage with us for a colourful installation along the border of the community garden! As part of Urban Wild, a week-long celebration of nature in the city, Jez Franck and Nicola Beck invite you to co-create an interactive public art installation at Bitterne Station Community Garden.
The artwork will explore the theme of 'Beautiful Garbage,' transforming found and upcycled objects into a site-specific installation that enhances the station environment.
‘Beautiful Garbage’ highlights the role of creativity in reclaiming and repurposing discarded materials to make urban spaces vibrant and inviting. Bitterne Station Community Garden, with its blend of wild and cultivated spaces, is the ideal setting for this project, particularly in the area adjacent to the road, where art can soften the boundary between urban infrastructure and green space.
Event Details:
Workshop (5 May 11am - 2pm): A four hour, hands-on session open to the public. You will work with upcycled and found objects to co-create elements of the final installation. The workshop will emphasize mixed-media techniques, sustainable practices, and creative exploration.
Installation (26 May 11am - 1pm): The collaboratively created pieces will be installed in the station garden, integrating with the space and enhancing its visual appeal. Participants will be invited to be a part of this, if they wish to, and to add any artwork they have made through the month at home.
Opening and Light-Up Event (26 May, 8 - 10pm): To celebrate the launch of the installation and the beginning of Urban Wild, we will invite the public to visit for an informal opening event, illuminating the work with solar fairy lights as the sun sets, with entertainment and light refreshments.
About Us: Jez Franck is a multidisciplinary artist working in mixed media, installations and festival art. They have extensive experience in leading interactive workshops and creating site-specific public art in open spaces. Nicola Beck is an artist photographer and poet, with a focus on nature, social justice and exploring personal stories. Together, we bring a shared passion for sustainability, community-driven creativity, and environmental art. We work with adults, who we feel often are denied access to creative activities seen as being ‘for kids’, to encourage playful experimentation and a return to creativity.
We will provide all necessary materials and equipment for the workshop and installation.
The workshop is priced on a pay-as-you-feel basis with nobody turned away for lack of funds.
This workshop is aimed at adults and young people.
