Join us for a very special performance of songs from the new album 'American Stories Major Chords' from Beau Jennings & The Tigers!
American Stories Major Chords, the new full-length from Oklahoma’s own Beau Jennings & The Tigers, is in its own way a miracle. Rock and roll records made by good friends telling stories with major chords are a primal element of the American rock n’ roll tradition. And in a day and age where pop hits are algorithmically generated and attention spans are ever-diminishing, a record where chiming guitars, sweet harmonies, and dusky vocals paint aural landscapes is a rare thing. An album with honest-to-goodness songwriting as its founding ethos? A minor sort of miracle at the very least.
With their 3rd album American Stories Major Chords, Beau Jennings & The Tigers present to us a world where the flow of everyday life illuminates the deepest nature of the human experience. “These songs are stories” says Jennings. “They’re not about me, although some elements of my life are in most songs I write.” While the tune “Norman Nights” draws inspiration for Jennings’ formative years as a musician, the experience recounted therein continue to play themselves out daily in small towns and big cities across the world. “Boston Ave.” distills the nagging permanence of childhood grief into verse and melody.
From the Americana/indie rock band Cheyenne to his ever-evolving solo career and penchant for home recording, Jennings explores the lives of others - both real and imagined – through his art. His songs shimmer in the space between narrative and allegory; a kaleidoscope of memories set to music, they feel oddly familiar and eminently relatable. His easy eloquence has led to collaborations with the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Richard Swift, and filmmaker Bradley Beesley (Fearless Freaks, Okie Noodling).
The end of Cheyenne and a renewed self-reliance on his solo career led to the creation of The Tigers, a core group of seasoned musicians who handle the songs expertly. Over the years Jennings & The Tigers have amassed a catalog of sublime releases that “capture what it feels like to feel lost in a familiar place” (NPR). American Stories Major Chordsdeftly captures that ephemeral moment where an artist gets out of their own way for a minute and lets the music happen.
Still, though, at its core this is rock ‘n’ roll for rock ‘n’ roll’s sake, as fun to listen to as it must be to perform. The Tigers are airtight, and they write, perform, and produce their own records; once again, a minor miracle. Which explains why Jennings and The Tigers have built a devoted following across the country. Together Jennings, guitarist Chase Kerby, drummer Dustin Ragland, pianist/organist Chris Wiser, and bassist and sound engineer Michael Trepagnier have shared the stage with Dwight Yoakam, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Heartless Bastards, John Moreland, and more.
It’s hard to keep a rock and roll band together, but the Tigers have seemingly found a way to make it work for the long haul. “The songs keep coming to me, and the band is there to play them, and so I think the future for us is wide open” says Jennings. “With each record I think we’ve found another angle of our sound, found a new way to be in a band especially in this day and age, This is our 3rd record in 5 years, and in many ways it feels like we’re just getting started. I think it’d be accurate to say we’re really just trying to document the time and place we live in via our favorite medium, a rock n roll record.” Once again, the Tigers have certainly delivered on that mission statement, and you can sing along to this one, too. A minor miracle, indeed.
