On February 25th, 1973, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars returned to Memphis on the ALADDIN SANE tour. The following night, David Bowie and the Spiders visited the Memphis Academy of Art in Overton Park. Bowie received a painting from watercolorist and teacher Dolph Smith. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust in Memphis, on Saturday February 25th, 2023 at Malco's Studio on the Square, filmmaker and sculptor Mike McCarthy will be screening a new documentary on the Art Academy culled from the archives of sculptor John McIntire's super 8 films from 1972 (along with McIntire's narration) titled BEATNIK MANOR (edited by Justin Elliott Thompson and produced by Dennis Black). McCarthy will also screen two short films regarding Bowie's visit titled THE FILM CLASS THAT FELL TO EARTH (2008) and SOMETHING ALIEN IN THE PARK (2023) exploring the concept of a Bowie sculpture in Overton Park, along with a few other surprises. Two screening times on Saturday afternoon: 3 pm and 5 pm. Before and after the screenings there will be a Bowie Pop-Up in the lobby. Wham Bam! See you there!
