Exploring Europe’s winter Masking traditions - ancestral rituals where tradition, spirit, and season intertwine.Join us for an illustrated journey into Europe’s untamed winter masking traditions—ancestral rites of banishing and blessing that carry communities through the dark season. We’ll explore the Bulgarian Kukeri, Hungarian Busójárás, British mummering, the Welsh Mari Lwyd, and other traditions in which masks, bells, and shared procession weave protection, ritual, and renewal.
Ritualist, mask and regalia maker Marina Szijarto will share images and stories from her explorations into the world of beasts with bells, offering insight into the creative and ancestral processes behind these rites. Expect an evening woven with seasonal mystery, ancestral craft, and old-world imagination… where these mythical beings sometimes magically appear.

About the artist:
Marina is a professional visual artist, shrine maker, and ritualist with a diverse and eclectic arts practice. Her worldview is rooted in animist principles and practices.
For over three decades, she has worked within community-engaged rites and celebrations, site-specific installations, theatrical performance, and ritual and ancestral crafts—collaborating with landscapes, human and more-than-human communities, and the shifting seasons of the earth.
She co-created A Night for All Souls at Mountain View Cemetery, a 20-year tradition that explored honouring our dead, and is a certified Ancestral Lineage Repair practitioner.
Marina is dedicated to embodying the creative alchemy of “my hands are their hands, their hands are my hands,” in relationship with her ancestors of blood—her roots are in Europe—and her ancestors of vocation. Through this devotion, she aims to inspire others to explore the role of sacred creativity for ancestral, personal, and cultural transformation - in collaboration with the seen and unseen, she strives to create spaces where magic can unfold.
