The three founders, singers and songwriters of beloved West Coast band Beachwood Sparks have reunited again after another ten year break with a beautiful, concise album to bring hope, nutrition & solace for our troubled minds.
Chris Robinson’s understated, fluid production & the band’s joyous direct approach is central. Rendering well wrought songs with simple but constantly imaginative set of instrumental arrangement.
MY LOVE, MY LOVE begins with a familiar country bounce but careens off into a crazy joyous freakout. TORN IN TWO is a charming, hooky lament of the age we live in, both openers driven by heavy, honking distorted guitars. One of BWS’s most poppy tunes to date FALLING FOREVER is driven by an Anglo-delic groovy thump with heart-melting harmonies and flows into the yearning cosmic psych of GENTLE SAMURAI to end side one.
Side two shuffles in with uptempo lump-in-the-throat GEM climaxing in a heavy surprise turn - which feels carries a message to the world. HIGH NOON is a woozy lovelorn song of devotion and trust that leads into the almost Go-Betweensy indie pop of WILD SWANS. A wonderfully piercing hymn to the twists and turns of a life spent following the music.
Beachwood Sparks have a unique ability to make you feel extreme sorrow and joy in unison. They never set out to heal the world but this record. “Across The River Of Stars” does some heavy lifting on hearts & minds.
It all feels like a wonderful act of faith to conjure so much sunshine in this low, dishonest decade. Sounds like overkill to call a collection of songs ‘brave’ but that’s how it feels. Realism, fatalism, but gently, wisely, insistently bending towards hope. We need this music. N Holton.
