Elizabeth Montagu was a patron of the arts, foundational member of the Bluestockings, education advocate and colliery owner. After the death of her husband and, arguably, to save her closest male heir from the ever-scandalous Robinson family name, Elizabeth Montagu took in her nephew. At 13 years old, Matthew took the family name of Montagu and became the sole heir of her estate. This talk will explore Elizabeth Montagu's methods of educating her heir with the backdrop of her affect and influence in Newcastle upon Tyne, using uncatalogued materials from Northumberland Record Office.Charlotte Emily Crawshaw is a PhD student at Northumbria University in collaboration with Northumberland Archives and research assistant for Elizabeth Montagu Correspondence Online. Her thesis looks at the connections between Elizabeth Montagu, education, business and Newcastle upon Tyne, both through correspondence and estate papers.
