Reimagining Explainable AI: a sociotechnical approach to explain machine learning decision making
This co-presented seminar from BDFI and partners LV=General Insurance will explore their three year project about explainable artificial intelligence.

This seminar will present an overview of the three-year project, focusing on:
- The partnership: reflecting on the insights gained from setting up an interdisciplinary collaboration between academia and industry
- The fieldwork: exploring how sociotechnical approaches can be mobilised to reframe explanations for machine learning and intervene on how explanations are ‘done’
- The outcomes: discussing how we extended the concept of XAI at LV=GI, breaking down the linear model of impact by re-positioning expertise to a joint engineering/social science collaboration
The results of the project underscore the importance of engaged, interdisciplinary research in critiquing as well as shaping AI practice.
